Born in Glasgow by a Scots father and Dutch mother, Dirk began a social work career in 1979, specializing in the field of children and families, juvenile offenders, disability and family law. He has held several National (United Kingdom) posts in social welfare developing social policy before embarking on a career in acting and writing. He is a trained Shakespearian actor, lecturer and consultant in Social Welfare/Media Studies. Among his credits, he has served as a teacher in Creative Writing and Drama at the Young Offenders Institution in Huntercombe, Nuffield, England; a coordinator for the Family Centre in Camden Social Services; a senior social worker for Enfield Social Services; a Parliamentary Officer – The British Association of Social Workers; and an Officer-in-Charge of an Adolescent Unit in the Nottinghamshire Social Services Department. He has also served as a researcher for a Comparative Study between Norway and the United Kingdom – Oslo, Juvenile Crime and Alternatives to Custody, funded by The Council of Europe.

He worked to restructure aspects of the Cleveland (UK) Social Work Department’s child care policy after a major national child abuse enquiry; chaired the Department of Health’s national enquiry into residential provision in England; the London Borough’s review and analysis of provision for vulnerable young adults and the Coalition of Young People and Social Security.
